Disclaimer: I’m not singling out any one side for doing this much less starting it. I’m just trying to call attention to a behavior that perpetuates the biggest problems in America today. And if your asking why I’m putting this disclaimer in here at all. I’d assuredly be accused of criticizing one side or the other only if I don’t make it clear.
It’s become apparent that political discussions in this country can best be characterized as “two ships passing in the night.” It’s astounding how little reasoning and effort is put into any kind of political argument now. All people do is repeat the same talking point that most of the time, it seems, are completely besides the point. Another problem I see is that both sides have created this “boogeyman” of what their opponents are and characterize everyone on the other side as hell spawn sent here as catalysis of the apocalypse. Which leads to the automatic assumption of moral superiority. I honestly find it incredible how people assume their ideas are 100% perfect. It almost seems like a small manifestation of narcissism to think your political views are irrefutable truth, all the while dismissing others as un-evolved cretins.
It just seems to me that many people are loosing sight on what the intentions and benefits are of a Republic/Democracy and Free Speech.
As a sort of disclaimer to those who will say “Free Speech is between the government and the people etc, etc.”
Yes, but it’s still beneficial to act, personally, within the spirit of Free Speech. What I mean by that is to not hold animosity towards an individual for their political views. This by no means you have to stay silent about or agree with their views, just that you treat them as you would treat any other human being. Why?
Because this hostile treatment is what leads to the current political false dichotomy. People conform to one group or another so that they have this social protection, as if ideas and opinions that don’t conform to one side or the other are too ignorant/naive/etc to have any validity. Thus creating the “echo chambers” that everyone’s bitching about.
I mean, how do you honestly expect anyone to seriously consider your opinion, if the only thing they’re meet with for holding their own, is insults?
Look at this picture.
What do you think made a white person of this era go to a Civil Rights march? Well I’ll tell you it wasn’t because they were being told to fuck off, kys, and generally insulted or harassed. If you want to create change in other people first you’ll need to have a positive relationship with them unless you intend to do it by force, which going back to acting in the spirit of Free Speech, goes directly against it and a civil society in general.
Not only that, but the whole point of a Republic/Democracy is to draw on the collective wisdom of the population. If we’re just going to draw distinct lines in the sand and say anyone outside is an enemy. Then why the fuck bother with a Democratic government? Might as well have an oligarchy and we’ll just be the peasants arguing about the oligarchs decisions and choices the same way we do with celebrities today. Yes a party system has upsides because it means you don’t have to be a billionaire to run a nation wide campaign, but at the same time if strictly towing the party line, and worse countering the opposing party just for the sake of it, is required then what’s the use in having a multitude of people and opinions? Again it’s effectively an oligarchy.
In conclusion: I’m worried more about the “race to the bottom” in political tactics and discourse rather than the actual political events going on. I guess what I’m trying to say is that for all the injustice and ignorance we perceive in the world attacking it will yield nothing and only propagate it if we don’t hold ourselves to some kind of civilized standard while dealing with it.
I’m going to cut myself off here and just leave you with this quote, who’s author is unknown.
“When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. But I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my country. When I found I couldn’t change my country, I began to focus on my town. However, I discovered that I couldn’t change the town, and so as I grew older, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, but I’ve come to recognize that if long ago I had started with myself, then I could have made an impact on my family. And, my family and I could have made an impact on our town. And that, in turn, could have changed the country and we could all indeed have changed the world.”

Those Nazis had a dictator and a private Army. The one’s today are, surprising, non-violent AFAIK.

TL; DR “Let me explain my white, male privilege to you all. Why is everyone so upset about everything? I don’t see anything that wrong. Why can’t you all just stop with all this nonsense?”
Maybe instead of complaining about people complaining, you could listen?
“All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”
Do something to resist this corruption of our government or there will be no one there when they come for you.

I never said anything about not resisting actions by the government or that people shouldn’t be upset. Just pointing out that many people seem to be going about it in counter productive ways.

Then instead of all that text you could have simply said:
Don’t like how things are? Go and do something about it rather than tell us how much you dislike everything right now.

1) Not Nazis
2) I never said anything against civil disobedience
3) I don’t even see how anything in this contradicts what they are doing there.

The current administration is being run by a self-professed white supremacist. Bannon wants a race war. He is a Nazi.

The Nazis started out non-violent too. There are a truly disturbing number of parallels between the early days of the Nazis, and the Trump administration.

True, but even if Trump did want to install him self as dictator he couldn’t do it the same way Hitler did. For starters Hitler and the Nazis, even when coming to power, had hardcore dedicated fanatic followers. People who were WW1 vets and criminals. Not the baby boomers and bros that Trump has support from. I think that’s a major factor people overlook is just how violent Hitler’s rise was.
This is just stuff that I pulled from the wiki page. But it’s important to note that Hitler began building what became the SS and the Nazi party starting in the early twenties and attempted a coup around that time.
Inspired by Benito Mussolini ’s March on Rome Hitler decided that a coup d’état was the proper strategy to seize control of the country. In May 1923, elements loyal to Hitler within the army helped the SA to procure a barracks and its weaponry, but the order to march never came.
A pivotal moment came when Hitler led the Beer Hall Putsch , an attempted coup d’état on 8–9 November 1923. Sixteen NSDAP members and four police officers were killed in the failed coup . Hitler was arrested on 11 November 1923. [29] Hitler was put on trial for high treason , gaining great public attention.
Not only that, but Hitler was the leader in the Nazi party all along and had their support by the time he came to power. Compared to Trump who came in on a whim and still has relatively poor support from the party he’s in.
Against this violent backdrop, Hitler’s party gained a shocking victory in the Reichstag, obtaining 107 seats (18.3%, 6,406,397 votes). The Nazis became the second largest party in Germany.
Then when he rose to power there was of course the Reichstag fire and proposed the bill that gave him emergency power, which was passed by the majority Nazi Reichstag.
So in review
1) Hitler had quite a lot of support from his party
2) His party had a paramilitary force capable of intimidating other political parties and voters
3) Was able to pass a bill giving him dictatorial power.
Trump on the other hand
1) Very little support from his own party, much less die hards.
2) No capabilities of projecting physical or violent force on anyone. (Despite what some people think the military wouldn’t suppress political opponents and Trump would have no leverage over them.)
3) Going back to number one there’s no way even an all Republican congress would give Trump that kind of power.
But of course it’s always prudent to keep a close eye on him anyway.

What is the morally defensible argument against Equality? What is the morally defensible argument against personaly autonomy? conversely, What is the morally defensible argument for Genocide? What is the morally defensible argument for segregation, apartheid, or slavery? There are no morally defensible arguments for these debates. We should not have them, we should not entertain them. Just because one has a right to free speech does not mean that we need to give attention or credibility to evil. To some degree, I agree with you, I feel that there is too much partisanship in politics, the democrats could come up with the cure for cancer and the GOP would ban it. The GOP could invent sustainable Fusion technology and the democrats would try to ban it. We do need to come together, but I will not come together, I will not be quiet, and I will not stop resisting until we move past these morally indefensible arguments. You want to debate infastructure spending, deficit reduction, diplomacy and foreign relations, military spending or healthcare, I’m all for it. The current topics that are present in the social dialogue should be snuffed out, we dont need to give racists, nazis and bigots the time of day. We owe them nothing, to indulge them in debate sullies us as a nation.
